Monica Martin’s story begins in Rhode Island, where she was raised in a place she describes as “close-knit, resilient, and always rooted in community.” Growing up, Monica was attuned to the daily struggles many people around her faced—struggles often hidden in plain sight. From an early age, she saw how access, or the lack of it, could profoundly shape someone’s confidence and sense of dignity.
It’s a theme that would come to define her work in ways she didn’t expect, as she journeyed through a career that now touches the lives of countless people across the state. Her professional path took her first to bustling coastal towns in the Hamptons, then to New York, and eventually Boston, where she honed her craft in the world of hospitality.
In these high-energy environments, Monica’s commitment to community-building set her apart. She brought these experiences back to Rhode Island, where she joined forces with Oscar Worthington, a seasoned restaurateur and mentor. Under Oscar’s guidance, Monica thrived, helping shape beloved local establishments like Brass Monkey, Sport and Leisure PVD, and Sport and Leisure EG. “Oscar has been an incredibly supportive mentor,” she reflects. “His guidance has helped me navigate my entrepreneurial journey with confidence and purpose.” While building a name for herself in the restaurant world, Monica began to realize that her true passion lay in tackling some of the social issues that had struck a chord with her as a young girl. With Kristin Vangrassamy, another Rhode Island native and close friend, Monica co-founded Project Confidence.
Their goal was straightforward but powerful: to address hygiene insecurity, an often invisible issue with a profound impact. “Access to basic hygiene products is essential to a person’s dignity and self-worth,” she says. The nonprofit provides hygiene kits to underserved individuals, particularly youth, throughout Rhode Island, helping them to feel empowered and confident. “It’s about so much more than just cleanliness; it’s about having the dignity to face the world with your head held high,” Monica explains.
Monica’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. She also co-founded Juicy Market PVD with Gretchen Lizarda, a local artist and advocate. Together, they envisioned a community market that would go beyond selling products—it would be a celebration of local culture and a platform for Rhode Island’s diverse creative talent. "We highlight local artists, makers, and small businesses that reflect the richness of our community," she says, describing Juicy Market PVD as a place where connection and creativity thrive. Unlike many markets, Juicy Market isn’t just a shopping destination; it’s a vibrant space that bridges artists with their community, helping them reach new audiences and grow their brands. But creating these spaces wasn’t easy.
Monica faced her share of obstacles, particularly as a female entrepreneur working to establish credibility in a competitive field. “One of the biggest challenges was being taken seriously and securing the right resources,” she says, reflecting on the barriers women often face in business. Yet through persistence and an unwavering focus on collaboration, she has proven herself a resilient leader. “Collaboration and persistence were key,” she explains.
By building strong relationships and creating spaces that reflect her community’s values, she has earned a place as a trusted figure in Rhode Island’s entrepreneurial scene. The impact of her work with both Project Confidence and Juicy Market PVD is already visible throughout Rhode Island.
For underserved youth, the hygiene kits provided by Project Confidence have been transformative. "We’ve seen a direct positive effect on the self-esteem and well-being of young people who now have access to hygiene products," Monica says. And Juicy Market’s impact ripples out to local artists and entrepreneurs, who find a supportive environment where they can showcase their work and thrive. "Both projects have contributed to fostering a stronger, more supportive community in Rhode Island," she adds with quiet pride.Community engagement lies at the core of everything Monica does. Whether it’s Project Confidence or Juicy Market, her mission is always to uplift and serve. She actively seeks input from her community, ensuring that her work aligns with their needs. "Our mission is always to uplift and serve the community," she says. "Listening to their needs and keeping an open dialogue helps us stay grounded and relevant." Looking ahead, Monica has even bigger plans.
Project Confidence will soon partner with Thrive Cosmetics to distribute 1,000 makeup kits to local LGBTQ+ centers, including Haus of Codec and Youth Pride RI. "These kits are meant to provide support and empowerment to individuals in these communities," she says, underscoring her dedication to reaching marginalized groups. And for Juicy Market, the upcoming holiday season will bring special markets at Pivotal Brewery and Proclamation Brewery, along with a Santa Market hosted by Moniker Brewery.
Each event will give local artists and small businesses a festive stage to connect with the community.Outside of her professional life, Monica finds balance through travel, exploring new places, and drawing inspiration from different cultures. She also loves spending time with friends and family, enjoying the outdoors, and taking time to recharge. "It’s all about finding a balance that keeps me grounded and energized," she shares.
This philosophy of balance, connection, and renewal permeates every aspect of her life and work. For young women who hope to make a similar impact, Monica offers this advice: "Start with a clear vision and stay persistent. Build a strong support network, seek out mentors, and don’t be afraid to take risks." Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, empathy, and community-minded leadership.
In Rhode Island, Monica Martin has shown that small actions—like providing a hygiene kit or creating a welcoming space for local artists—can foster transformation and leave a lasting legacy of compassion and empowerment.
